How SCORE helped.

“Getting a chiropractic adjustment for pain is like taking a Tylenol; it's like putting on a bandaid," says Dr. Erin McNulty of Spine by Design in Hampton, NH.  “If we only work with pain, we are not addressing the true source of the problem(s). I want to raise the bar on chiropractic care” says Dr. McNulty. And she is doing just that in her Hampton, NH location.  What’s different is that her patients receive a holistic approach that examines lifestyle choices and their impact on overall function. Dr. McNulty completes a full history intake as well as neurological and postural scans. "There is so much more to health than just pain control,” she says.

Growing up in Stratham, Dr. McNulty went to the University of NH and Life University of Georgia where she received her doctorate in Chiropractic care.  She has extensive training in SacroOccipital Technique, which includes extremity technique, craniopathy, and chiropractic manipulative reflex techniques. She also has a focus on pediatric care.

“Since our first meeting it was evident that Dr. Erin had a very clear picture in mind of how she wanted her practice to function,” says mentor John Kane, “Erin knew from that experience what she wanted to do differently as well as what she would adopt in her office. Dr. McNulty was not afraid to rely on experts for areas where she did not have the experience.”  “I never thought I would have my own office. However, I worked as an associate for the past 4 years and decided I wanted to be on my own.  I wanted to be the chiropractor that I wanted to be, not what someone else told me to be” she says.

With persistence and focus, she was determined to find a way.   At her mother’s suggestion, she reached out to Seacoast SCORE. “They were a sounding board, they gave me ideas and examples of how things have worked for them in the past.  They helped me work on marketing myself to the community, using my budget wisely, kept me on target, and helped with projections.” Says Dr. McNulty.  “I attended every workshop that Score had.”

Dr. McNulty has seen significant growth in her business.  Mentors Karen

Ahern and John Kane say along with her approach to chiropractic care, self-motivation is a big part of Dr. McNulty’s success. “Erin has done an exemplary job of embedding herself and making her practice known in her community, as a way to source new clients,” says Karen Ahern.  Dr. McNulty joined her local Chamber of Commerce, has hosted several open houses, has done demos at local events, and actively reaches out to her community.

As of now, she is satisfied with that growth and has a good sense of how her customers are finding her.  When asked what the biggest challenge she has faced is, she says mindset. “The biggest barrier that entrepreneurs have is that we have these terror barriers we use to protect ourselves but they don’t allow us to reach the full potential of things. I was lucky to meet someone 5 years ago who changed my mindset." She also credits her business coach and extensive reading.  She recommends Relentless, Never Lose a Customer Again, or any book by Tony Robbins for those who have trouble envisioning their success.
